Overview

Universidad Marítima Internacional de Panamá (UMIP) is Panama’s leading maritime university, established by Law No. 40 on December 1, 2005. Based in Panama City at the former Albrook Air Force Base, UMIP specializes in maritime education and hands-on training for future merchant marine officers and maritime professionals. The university also absorbed Panama’s historic Nautical School (founded in 1958), broadening its academic scope to support modern port, coastal, and logistics operations.

UMIP supports Panama’s maritime sector, which remains central to the country’s economy because of the Panama Canal. The university focuses on applied training, operational research, and safety-minded, sustainable approaches to maritime work, and it continues to collaborate with external institutions such as the Georgia Tech Panama Foundation to strengthen research and technical exchange.
