Overview

The University of Kara (Université de Kara), established by presidential decree on January 21, 1999 and officially opened on January 23, 2004, is the second largest public university in Togo. Located in the city of Kara in northern Togo, it was created to extend higher education access beyond the capital. The institution opened with 1,537 students and has grown significantly, enrolling over 18,000 students by 2017–2018, including undergraduate and postgraduate learners.

Université de Kara follows the Licence-Master-Doctorat (LMD) system adopted nationally since 2009 and is grouped into multiple faculties and institutes focused on humanities, law, economics, health sciences, sciences & technology, and agriculture. It is a member of the Association of African Universities and REESAO, contributing actively to regional academic excellence and mobility across West Africa.

6. Accommodation

The university provides limited on‑campus housing primarily in its new Pya campus area. Dormitories are gender‑segregated shared rooms with basic amenities. Due to limited capacity, many students rent accommodation in Kara city nearby.
