Al-Mustansiriya University

Overview

Al-Mustansiriya University, located in Baghdad, Iraq, is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the Middle East. Its origins trace back to 1227 CE when it was established as the Mustansiriyya Madrasa by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir. The madrasa was renowned for its comprehensive curriculum, covering subjects such as medicine, mathematics, literature, philosophy, and Islamic law. The institution played a pivotal role in the Islamic Golden Age, contributing significantly to the intellectual and cultural development of the region.

The modern incarnation of Al-Mustansiriya University was re-established in 1963 with the support of the Republic of Iraq Teachers’ Union. Initially offering evening courses, it quickly expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure. By 1968, it had gained full university status, becoming a separate entity from the University of Baghdad. Today, the university comprises multiple colleges, including Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Engineering, Arts, and Political Science, among others.
