University of Sulaimani

University of Sulaimani

Overview

The University of Sulaimani (often written as University of Sulaymaniyah) is a leading public university in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, established in 1968 by Professor Dr. Mohammed Salih Beg. Based in Sulaymaniyah, the university has played a long-standing role in regional higher education and research.

Originally launched with five faculties—Medicine, Engineering, Science, Agriculture, and Arts—the university was closed in 1981 for political reasons, and its faculties were transferred to Erbil, helping form the University of Salahaddin. In 1992, the University of Sulaimani reopened through the work of Kurdish intellectuals and academics.

Today, the university includes 11 colleges and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across multiple disciplines. The university is home to approximately 25,000 students, supported by a faculty strength of around 3,000, with an emphasis on strengthening both teaching and academic research.
