Overview
The University of Sulaimani, established in 1968 by Professor Dr. Mohammed Salih Beg, is one of the oldest and most prestigious public universities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Located in the city of Sulaymaniyah, the university serves as a significant center for scientific and cultural advancement in the region.
Initially comprising five faculties—Medicine, Engineering, Science, Agriculture, and Arts—the university was closed in 1981 due to political reasons and its faculties were transferred to Erbil, forming the University of Salahaddin. In 1992, the University of Sulaimani was officially reopened, thanks to the efforts of Kurdish intellectuals and academics.
Today, the university encompasses 11 colleges, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. With a student population of approximately 25,000 and a faculty strength of around 3,000, the university is committed to providing quality education and fostering research across various disciplines.
