Overview
Université Martin Luther King (UMLK) is a higher education institution in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, founded in 1986 to advance Dr. King’s vision of social justice through education. Often highlighted as a pioneer in civil rights-focused learning in Africa, UMLK combines African liberation philosophy with modern social sciences. A key part of student life is the university’s Service-Learning Quarter, where students complete field projects in marginalized communities across West Africa.
On its 40-hectare campus in the Banco National Park area, UMLK positions sustainability and community engagement at the center of learning. The university has supported generations of human rights advocates and social entrepreneurs, with particular strengths in gender studies, post-conflict reconciliation, and diaspora relations. Each year, Dream Week brings together activists, scholars, and students from across Africa and the global diaspora for talks, workshops, and collaborative sessions.
