University of Kara

University de Kara

Overview

The University of Kara (Université de Kara), created by presidential decree on January 21, 1999 and officially opened on January 23, 2004, is one of Togo’s most important public universities. Located in Kara in northern Togo, the university was established to widen access to higher education beyond the capital. At opening, it had 1,537 students, and it has since grown to enroll over 18,000 students (2017–2018), including both undergraduate and postgraduate learners.

Université de Kara operates under the Licence–Master–Doctorat (LMD) system adopted nationally since 2009. It is organized into faculties and institutes covering humanities, law, economics and management, health sciences, sciences and technology, and agriculture. The university is also a member of the Association of African Universities and REESAO, supporting regional academic exchange and mobility across West Africa.

4. Academic Programs

Université de Kara’s academic offerings are mainly concentrated in its core faculties, with master’s and doctoral pathways built on the same LMD structure. Students interested in Law, Economics, Health Sciences, or Sciences & Technology typically find multiple tracks within these faculties.

  • Bachelor’s – Letters & Human Sciences (FLESH)
  • Bachelor’s – Law & Political Science (FDSP)
  • Bachelor’s – Economics & Management (FaSEG)
  • Bachelor’s – Sciences & Techniques (FAST)
  • Bachelor’s – Health Sciences (FSS)
  • Master’s and Doctoral programs across those faculties
  • Professional programmes in agriculture via ISMA

If you are comparing options across Togo’s interior and capital, you may also want to review University of Sokodé and Université de Lomé, since both universities offer additional study choices depending on your field.

5. Facilities

The university supports learning with campuses, teaching spaces, and shared academic resources. Depending on your program, facilities may include specialized labs (for sciences and health training) and dedicated spaces for humanities, economics, and legal studies. The computing and multimedia resources are a key strength for coursework and research support.

  • Two campuses: Campus Sud (Ex-ENI) and Campus Nord (Pya – new site nearly completed)
  • Second-largest computing and multimedia resource center in the subregion with hundreds of workstations (since 2013)
  • Libraries, lecture halls, laboratories, and Wi‑Fi-enabled ICT centers
  • Facilities for law, humanities, economics, sciences, and health training
  • Professional agricultural training via Institut Supérieur des Métiers Agricoles (ISMA)

For students who want to compare campus life and student services in other institutions, it can be useful to check how facilities are structured at University of Labé (Guinea) or other West African universities with similar regional programs and student support models.

6. Accommodation

On-campus housing is limited and mostly concentrated around the newer Pya campus area. Because many students cannot secure dormitory space, it is common to rent accommodation in Kara city near the university.

  • Hostel rooms shared by 2–4 students
  • Basic furnishings and communal facilities
  • Water and electricity provisions (shared)
  • Proximity to campus and local markets

Before arrival, students are encouraged to plan early for housing and budgeting, especially during peak enrollment periods.
