Overview
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), established in 1962, is Nigeria’s largest university by land area (7,000 hectares) and second largest by student population (49,000). Located in Zaria, ABU operates 17 faculties, 1 college, and 82 academic departments across two campuses. The university is named after the Sardauna of Sokoto and is the center of Islamic learning in Nigeria, housing Africa’s largest Arabic studies program.
ABU’s Faculty of Agriculture is the continent’s biggest agricultural training institution with 12 research farms. The university’s engineering programs are accredited by both COREN and the UK Engineering Council. ABU pioneered Nigeria’s first degree programs in Quantity Surveying and Nuclear Physics. The institution maintains the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, a 850-bed facility serving northern Nigeria. ABU’s notable research achievements include developing drought-resistant crop varieties and pioneering work on renewable energy systems. The university’s alumni network includes 5 African presidents and Nigeria’s first female helicopter pilot. ABU’s main campus features the famous Kongo Conference Center and the Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic.
