Overview
Mogadishu University (MU) is a private, non‑profit institution founded in September 1997 in Mogadishu, Somalia. It was created by Somali academics and intellectuals with a mission to rebuild higher education after decades of civil conflict. MU started with just six faculty members and a few hundred students, and it has grown into one of the largest universities in Somalia, serving around 11,000–16,000 students across six campuses in the capital city.
MU focuses on accessible, affordable, and quality higher education grounded in Somali values and aligned with global academic standards. It offers programs in English and Arabic, blends classroom learning with practical training, and encourages community service. MU also supports research through institutes and centres—including those focused on Somali studies, water and environment, media training, and legal clinics—and it maintains collaborations with international institutions across Africa and the Arab world.
