Overview
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), established in 1962 as the University of Ife, is Nigeria’s most beautiful campus spanning 11,862 acres of land in Ile-Ife. Renamed in 1987 to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the university has 13 faculties and 2 colleges offering 92 undergraduate and 110 postgraduate programs. OAU is renowned for its unique architectural design featuring the famous “Great Ife” amphitheater and sprawling botanical gardens.
The university maintains the highest student-to-professor ratio (15:1) among Nigerian universities with over 1,200 academic staff. OAU’s Faculty of Pharmacy consistently ranks as Africa’s top pharmacy school, while its College of Health Sciences operates a 850-bed teaching hospital. The institution pioneered Nigeria’s first degree programs in Demography and Dental Surgery. OAU’s research output is exceptional, with particular strengths in African studies, pharmaceutical sciences, and engineering. The university’s 35,000 students benefit from 17 residential halls, Africa’s largest university library system (1.8 million volumes), and 62 research centers. OAU alumni include 3 Nigerian state governors and Africa’s first professor of Aerospace Engineering.
