Université Martin Luther King

Overview

Université Martin Luther King (UMLK) is a pioneering institution in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, founded in 1986 to advance Dr. King’s vision of social justice through education. As Africa’s first university dedicated to civil rights studies and nonviolent leadership development, UMLK combines African liberation philosophy with modern social sciences. The university’s distinctive “Service-Learning Quarter” requires all students to complete field projects in marginalized communities across West Africa.

Our 40-hectare campus in the Banco National Park area serves as a living laboratory for sustainable urban development. UMLK has produced numerous human rights advocates and social entrepreneurs, with particular strength in gender studies, post-conflict reconciliation, and diaspora relations. The university’s annual “Dream Week” brings together activists, scholars and students from across the African continent and its global diaspora.
