Overview

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), established in 1962, is Nigeria’s flagship university for innovation and entrepreneurship. Located on 802 acres of prime land in Akoka, Yaba, UNILAG has produced over 200,000 graduates including 5 state governors. The university operates 12 faculties and 94 departments with particular strengths in law, business administration, and marine sciences.

UNILAG’s College of Medicine is one of only 3 Nigerian medical schools accredited in the US and UK. The institution pioneered Nigeria’s first degree programs in actuarial science and maritime transport. With over 60,000 students, UNILAG has the most competitive admission rate in Nigeria (7% acceptance). The university generates 40% of its revenue through partnerships with 85 multinational corporations. UNILAG’s main library contains 1.4 million volumes including rare African manuscripts. The university runs a dual-mode system (regular and distance learning) and awards 350 PhDs annually. UNILAG’s 27 research centers focus on African development challenges, with particular expertise in coastal erosion and infectious diseases. The university’s alumni network includes Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote and Nobel nominee Chimamanda Adichie.
