The University of Makeni (UniMark) is the first private Catholic university in Sierra Leone. Founded on 8 October 2005 as the Fatima Institute by the Diocese of Makeni, it gained full university status in August 2009. UniMark serves approximately 3,500 students across its main campus in Makeni and a regional campus in Kabala, providing education rooted in social impact and community service. It emphasizes research engagement, sustainable development, and applied learning

UniMark operates multiple faculties including Agriculture & Food Sciences, Commerce & Management, Education, Social Sciences & Law, Mass Communication & Computer Science, Philosophy & Humanities & Religious Studies. It has launched innovative postgraduate degrees such as an MBA in Impact Entrepreneurship and a Master’s in Sustainable Development. The university is actively involved in mental health advocacy and leads research initiatives, including genomics work through its Infectious Disease Research Laboratory.
