Overview
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), established in 1960, is Nigeria’s first indigenous university founded by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Spread across four campuses (Nsukka, Enugu, Ituku-Ozalla, and Aba), UNN operates 15 faculties and 102 academic departments. The university pioneered the American-style semester system in Africa and remains Nigeria’s most innovative institution with 7 specialized research institutes.
UNN’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is West Africa’s largest veterinary training facility, while its Engineering programs are accredited by the UK Engineering Council. The university’s Nsukka campus spans 871 hectares featuring iconic structures like the Lion Building and UNESCO-listed Odim Hill. UNN maintains academic partnerships with 68 international universities including Harvard and Oxford. The institution’s 43,000 students benefit from Africa’s first electronic library system and Nigeria’s largest university press. UNN’s research breakthroughs include developing Africa’s first digital microscope and pioneering work on tropical diseases. Notable alumni include 2 African presidents and Nigeria’s first female combat pilot.
