The University of Ruhuna, established in 1978 and upgraded to a full-fledged university in 1984, is the only university in southern Sri Lanka. With its main campus in Wellamadama, Matara, and additional faculties across Kamburupitiya and Galle, it serves students through a broad set of disciplines—from science and engineering to medicine, agriculture, and humanities. The university currently supports over 13,000 students across its faculties.
