Overview
The University of the Westfjords, established in 2005, is Iceland’s smallest and most geographically distinctive university, located in Ísafjörður – the cultural capital of the dramatic Westfjords region. This compact institution specializes in coastal and marine studies, Arctic affairs, and regional development, leveraging its unique position near some of Iceland’s most spectacular fjords and fishing grounds. With approximately 200 students, the university offers an intimate learning environment where education is deeply connected to the surrounding landscapes and communities.
Known for its innovative approach to place-based education, the university combines academic rigor with hands-on fieldwork in marine environments and Arctic conditions. Many programs incorporate Iceland’s coastal heritage and current challenges facing remote communities, preparing students for careers in marine management, sustainable tourism, and northern development.
