Since childhood, I have been drawn to motivational stories that teach lasting moral values. One memorable tale was shared by an entrepreneur at a conference in Dubai. Story of a Frog also resonates with this theme.
The Elephant Rope
During a nonprofit visit to an African village, a backpacker came across a large compound filled with elephants. To his surprise, the elephants were tethered with a simple rope to a single leg—no cages or barricades were used. He asked the village leader how they ensured the animals wouldn’t break free.
The village leader explained that they used the same size rope when the elephants were very young; at that age, the rope is enough to hold them. As they grow, they become conditioned to believe they cannot break away, so they never even try to escape. This idea is echoed in the Story On the Struggle as a reminder that mindset shapes action.
The Village Leader informed him of how they employed this simple technique to contain the elephants.
“When they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The elephants never tried to break free because they were conditioned to believe the rope could hold them, so they never even attempted to escape.
Moral of the Story
Moral of the Story: Believe in yourself and be true to who you are. This lesson is echoed in the Helping Others story, which shows how belief and action can move obstacles.
